Animal Art Display on the Streets of Sale

Be on the lookout this summer as rhinos, alligators and giraffes are just some of the animals which will be on the loose as part of the Sale Art Zoo project , writes Kate Nield

The Sale Art Zoo project is celebrating Chester Zoo founder George Mottershead’s connection to the town of Sale, culminating in a vibrant display of colourfully decorated life-size animals throughout the town centre this summer.

Approximately 35 zoo animals will be on display for the eight week exhibition, comprising baby hippos, rhino, alligators, pelicans, penguins, zebra and giraffes decorated by children across the 19 primary schools in Sale.

Two by Two is the Community Group behind this exciting project. Set up in January 2015, the group is run by Anna Chopping and Zoe Taylor, two local mums who were keen to develop and organise creative events and activities for people in Sale. Inspired by the success of Sale Arts Trail (when artists open their studios), and keen to build on the family arts offering in the town, Zoe and Anna decided to set up Two by Two.

Zoe Taylor, Two by Two founder said: “The project has gathered so much support over these last 12 months; with over 5000 local school children decorating the animal sculptures, we’ve led intergenerational workshops, we’ve had local artists, families and countless volunteers helping us pull everything together. Sale will be able to take great pride in this fantastic event!”

The Sale Art Zoo is a free activity for visitors, families and residents to take part in over the summer holidays. Tesco in Sale have offered to print all 10,000 Sale Art Zoo Trail Maps and people will be able to collect a free map to use as they walk around the town discovering a fun outdoor exhibition of life-size highly decorated model zoo animals.

Two by Two have also managed to secure funding to create an exhibition about George Mottershead that will run for the duration of the Sale Art Zoo Trail in Sale Library. This will be a fun and interactive exhibition that will appeal to all generations.

Two by Two are excited about the support and interest that their activities have received over the last year. They are now looking to develop their team of volunteers, to establish a group which can grow the number of events and activities they offer locally. If you’d like to know more about supporting Two by Two, or to hear more about their upcoming activities, pay their website a visit at  or follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

And whatever you do … be on the lookout for wild animals on the loose in Sale Town Centre this Summer!
