Destination Florida is a children’s charity based in the North West of England. It specialises in organising sunshine holidays to Florida, for children (aged 7-15) who have missed out on some of the fun of childhood, due to illness. By Kate Nield
The week-long holidays are meticulously organised, with a medical team of experienced doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and carers, enabling the children to be given their normal medical treatment, yet still enjoying the holiday of a lifetime.
Sue Tutty, a volunteer who has been on several trips, told Little Tigers why these holidays are so special: “It is an opportunity for children to be children, but with the full back up of an experienced medical team. It is not only the children who benefit, but also the parents and carers, as they are offered some respite.”
Sue explained that one of the most rewarding things about the trips is that “you see how the children identify with each other and how wonderful friendships are made. Miraculous things happen when you take the children out of their normal day to day environment.”
Destination Florida depends on fundraising and the generosity of its supporters; they hold many amazing fundraising events.
One of their main events is the Summer Ball, which this year was held at Mere Golf Resort & Spa on 11 June and included a 4 course dinner, celebrity guests and a great evening of entertainment. The Summer Ball is always a sell-out, so if you think you might like to attend next year, keep an eye on the Destination Florida website and book your tickets early!
Other events have included Fashion Shows and Boxing Nights and the team are always interested in new ideas on how they can raise money. If you have a good idea for a fundraising activity or event, please get in touch with Destination Florida.
On the 7th of October this year, a total of 75 very poorly and deserving children will depart from Manchester to experience the holiday of a lifetime in sunny Florida.
Any child can be nominated to take part in a trip. For details on the nomination process – and to find out how you can support this fantastic charity – please contact the charity by visiting their website.
