There is a whole world of carbootery out there, and a car boot sale can be great fun with kids, whether you are a buyer or a seller. These events get very busy on sunny days, so get there early before the crowds if you can.
If you are selling, the car boot sale experience can take up a whole weekend of finding old things lying around the house, pricing them up, putting them in boxes and loading the car. And then bringing all the unsold stuff home and unpacking it again. You can make some useful cash and get rid of stuff you don’t want any more, but be warned, prices are always extremely low at car boot sales, so don’t expect to make your fortune.
When you arrive, it is possible that someone may approach you and ask for whatever they trade in – old vinyl records, mobile phones, jewellery – just bat them off and get on with unloading your gear. Make sure you take fold-up tables and some loose coins for change … and keep a close eye on your children and cash.
If you are buying, you also need to keep a close eye on your children and your cash … and try to avoid coming home with armfuls of stuff that you really don’t need. You can find some incredible bargains at a car boot sale, and it is fascinating to see what oddities people are getting rid of. Most sellers are happy to barter so don’t be afraid to offer 25p if they ask for 30p.
