Don't Pass the Parcel by Sarah Clark

Worried that the kids at your child's party will heve a deep 'oh no, not again' sigh of boredom when you announce yet another round of (yawn) Pass the Parcel? A quick Google search reveals hundreds of party games you may have never heard of....and some you may have played as a child and since forgotten. Here are 5 great games to freshen up you're parties:

FAIRY TALE DASH The kids sit in a circle and become the characters in a well-known fairy story. If it's Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, the wolves could wear furry hats, the Grannies frilly hats, and so on. A parent reads the story, and every time their character's name is mentioned, the kids have to run into the middle and then run back to their chair. They have to listen carefully and act fast - this game can get quite crazy!

  1. CENTIPEDE RACE Best done outside in a large space, the kids get into two lines with each child holding onto the waist of the child in front. When you blow the whistle, the giant centipedes race up the garden, round a tree and back again. The fastest team wins but if someone lets go and breaks the centipede, their team loses.

SQUEAK PIGGY SQUEAK The kids sit in a circle while the birthday child is blindfolded and spun around in the middle. He or she stumbles about, finds someone's lap to sit on and says, "squeak piggy squeak". If they correctly guess from the noises whose lap they're sitting on, it's that person's turn next. This game makes everyone laugh.
FISHY GAME Fill a box with small presents wrapped with string loops, and make one or two fishing rods with sticks and hooks. The kids pass round a dice (with large groups, have two so they don't get bored waiting). When you roll a 6, shout "SIX!" and run to the box to start fishing. Keep fishing for prizes until someone else rolls a 6 and bumps you off. You'll need to supervise the box and who's bumping off whom, as this game can get rowdy and competitive!
APPLE BOBBING Get a bowl of water full of apples and towels close by. The kids try to get the apples with their teeth without using their hands. An old classic!
